5 Unique Experiences You Can Have in Los Roques

The Los Roques Archipelago is more than just a visual paradise, it's a place where you can enjoy unforgettable adventures that blend sports, nature, local culture, and once-in-a-lifetime moments. Here are five experiences that make this destination truly magical:

1. Kite Safari: Ride Between Cays with Your Kite

If you’re confident on a kiteboard, the Kite Safari is the crown jewel. It’s a kitesurf journey across several cays of the archipelago, flat waters, coral reefs, deep channels, and breathtaking scenery all around.

Routes vary, but some local favorites include:

-From Sebastopol to Cayo Vapor, skimming along the coral reef.

-From Saki Saki to Madrisquí, through calm, crystal-clear waters.

-From Cayo Sardina to Craski, with broader and more challenging stretches.

You're always accompanied by a local guide and a support boat (peñero), and you can add extras like a photographer, a cooler with drinks and snacks, and a beach setup. It’s a perfect experience for intermediate or advanced kiteboarders and a unique way to explore Los Roques from the water.

2. Skydiving Over the Archipelago

Seeing Los Roques from the sky is something else entirely. Tandem skydives are organized from light aircraft, with certified instructors ensuring a safe and exhilarating experience. You take off from the Gran Roque airstrip and typically land on Madrisquí, just 10 minutes away by boat from Gran Roque.

This activity isn't available year-round, but it can be arranged in advance, especially during high season or for large groups. The view? A living map of sand and coral over turquoise waters.

3. Swim with harmless sharks

A little-known but absolutely unforgettable experience. Join a local guide for a swim with nurse sharks, completely harmless creatures with calm, gentle behavior. These outings are fully controlled, super safe, and always guided by someone who knows the waters. It's a unique way to connect with marine life and face your fears with respect and excitement.

4. fishing with a local guide

Spend a morning like a true Roqueño. Head out on a peñero (local boat) with a local fisherman and try your hand at traditional fishing in the waters around Gran Roque. It’s an authentic cultural experience, learn local fishing techniques, discover the types of fish common in the area, and share meaningful moments with those who know the sea like home. Perfect for those who value human connection and local knowledge.

5. Sunset cocktails & music at Play Los Roques

After a day of kitesurfing, beach hopping, or pure relaxation, there’s no better way to wrap it up than with a sunset at Casa Play. Our beachfront bar is the liveliest spot in town, great music, a chill vibe, unique cocktails, and a one-of-a-kind atmosphere. It’s the perfect place for locals and travelers to come together, share stories, and end the day with music and good company.
