Surf, kitesurf, windsurf, kitefoil or wingfoil?
If you love the ocean and adrenaline, you’ve probably heard of several water sports like surf, kitesurf, windsurf, kitefoil, and the newest one, wingfoil. They all share one thing: they’re practiced on water using a board. But what makes each of them different?
SURF
This is the most traditional and probably the most well-known. In surfing, you ride waves on a board powered only by the ocean’s force. No sails or kites, just you, the board, and the waves. It’s a discipline that requires patience, balance, and deep connection with the sea. It’s one of the most challenging and you need to be in a place with good swell.

Kitesurf
In kitesurfing, the wind is your engine. You ride a board while controlling a kite that pulls you across the water. This lets you reach high speeds, perform jumps, and cover long distances. In places like Los Roques, with steady winds and calm waters, it’s simply perfect. If you love adrenaline, wind, and body control, this is the sport for you. Plus, it’s faster to learn than many think, you can be up on the board in about 8 hours.
Windsurf
Windsurfing combines a board with a fixed sail that you control directly with your hands. It’s a classic from the 80s that’s still going strong, especially among those who love wind sports but prefer a more solid setup than a kite. It requires technique and strength, but offers a unique riding experience.
Kitefoil: flying over the water
The foil is a long fin under the board that, once you gain speed, lifts you above the surface, making you “fly” over the water. When you add a kite to it (kitefoil), you get an incredibly efficient, fast, and silent ride. You can even cruise in low wind conditions. It’s a version of kitesurfing ideal for experienced riders looking to level up or ride when the wind is light.
Wingfoil: total freedom with wings
The newest of them all. Wingfoil uses a small inflatable wing that you hold in your hands, no lines, no harness like in kitesurfing. The board also has a foil, allowing you to glide above the water. It’s light, versatile, and super fun for those seeking a free, untethered experience.
